Movie Thoughts
10 Jul 2006 21:15Movie of the night was Glory, about a black battalion fighting for the Union in the American Civil War.
I must say -- in the theme of turning into my mother -- that I'm having trouble with way movies of late. There's a lot of movies where the plot centres on one person dying and how that ripples out, destroying and hurting as it goes. So a movie about a group of people who are professional killers is difficult to really get my head around somehow (this only seems to apply to serious war movies -shrugs-). I admire the characters. I realise many of them were fighting for freedom in a way that many modern soldiers are not, but still... I keep thinking of the Mark Twain story "War Prayer" (right period, even).
I also have in mind how how shitty the treatment of blacks in the armed forces was for the next hundred years after that. Just saying.
Otherwise, jolly good. I'll watch Washington and Freeman in just about anything and they shone as always. Also, Blind Boys of Alabama! Why didn't I bring that album?
So is the part where Smith and Forbes make out like it's 1969 in the special extended edition or what? Because wow.
