Which I now realise are not all created equal, as I found a series that I very much like, then backtracked some of the characters to have a better idea of what in the world (or Reality 616, at least) was going on, and found that, on the whole, kerpowing, zapping, and kersplatting bores me to tears. (Though now my room mates, who have been occasionally reading over my shoulder - out loud and in funny voices, are wrestling while saying such things as "SHEK!" and "SPLOTO." Comic books seem to have brought violence to my household).
I get that they're about superheroes and all, and that generally the point of superheroes is to kersplat the other guy before he kersplats the world, but I generally wish that there was more talk and less action. A couple issues had one character sick, and all the other characters hanging out with her in the hospital; I think that was my favourite story line. (Other than the very silly one wherein the team plus a favourite guest star went back in time to help King Arthur fight dragons and enjoyed every minute of it).
Mentally reviewing my new shiny comic, I think that there was a bout the same ratio of kersplatting to characterisation as the back issues. It's just that the new writer is way better at fitting characterisation into the kersplatting.
I also have a new appreciation for something that had previously annoyed me: only getting twenty-two pages of story a month. I think that split up a bit more, it generally works better. Reading over thirty issues in three days, not so much.
I will now do the dance of my new shiny comic that I love (and caused all this back tracking in the first place) comes out on Wednesday!
