muccamukk: Promo shot of Jabe. Text: "Direct descendent of the tropical rainforest." (DW: Decendent of Trees)
Despite living on a lighthouse with no TV reception (if we wiggled the rabbit ears enough, we could get the sounds but no picture of Channel 11 out of Seattle), and for a number of years, no TV at all, I managed to be a die hard Trekkie from about age six to sixteen. I'm unsure how this occurred, but somehow I got into it, watching in town when at Grandma's, and when I was seven, a neighbour had most of Next Gen on video. After that, I watched it whenever I was in town, and Wednesday nights were my favourite. I got into the books, and had a bunch of the books on tape read by the actors. I tended to like TOS better than TNG or DS9, mostly because of the h/c friendship angle. I read the books a lot more than I watched the show. I must have had nearly two hundred of them at one point.

I was in town when Voyager first came on, and I watched the pilot and loved it. Then, as I had it on tape, I watched it a pile more times on tape. Janeway had a huge OMG! A GIRL! factor happening with eleven-year-old!me, and I loved how passionate and intelligent she was. I love Torres and her engineering genius, I was very fond of Kim/Paris in any variation. Found Neelix and the Doctor vaguely irritating. Very Fond of Tuvok. My favourite character was Chakotay, by far. Which led to horrible conundrums like:

Dad: Who's you're favourite character.
Me: Chakotay!
Dad: Is he your favourite in all the shows?
Me: Yes!
Dad: So you like him better than Geordi La Forge?
Me: ...

Which is really not a choice any eleven year old should have to make.

I was more of a gen sort of person in those years, but you'd have to be pretty unaware not to notice the way the show runners, Jeri Taylor especially, were pushing the romance, and I was a moderately die hard fan of the relationship between Janeway and Chakotay in any form it took.

I could only watch the show intermittently though, as I'd program grandma's VCR to grab the episodes, but that was only six to a tape, if the power didn't blip and dump the programming. So I caught a lot of it but not all, missed chunks that I never have seen, and generally couldn't keep up the effort after about season four.

I recently rewatched "Coda" which is the one with Janeway dying in Chakotay's arms, repeatedly, while he weeps over her, (that was pretty much thirteen-year-old!me's favourite thing in the whole entire universe, especially since she didn't actually die, and he gave her a rose at the end) -- and all the terribly fond feelings came back. I still adore those two, and their messed up ship and crew. I ship them like you wouldn't believe. I'm looking for fic that reflects the epicness of what I think about them, but haven't found much to touch it.

It's always nice to run into an old fandom and it's actually as much fun as you remember it.
