LJ and High Fantasy
7 Apr 2011 21:35I feel like I should comment somehow on LJ, as everyone seems to. I still keep a flist there as some people too dear to leave and a couple comms are pretty settled, but for the most part I post here. I sympathise hugely with people who use it as their primary blog, but this whole thing has made me think pretty well of LJ management. They are finally standing by their users as best they can.

snowynight has been posting her own translations of some of her favourite Chinese poetry. They are quite beautiful.
I've been listening to the BBC Radio version of The Lord of the Rings, which has had a few effects on my life.
It has, for example, made me want to use the exclamation Behold! more than I currently do. I also kind of want to wander around describing my interactions with things and stating the bleeding obvious for the benefit of people who can't see what I'm doing. "Behold! Just above the hills, there is a small red and white helicopter. I wonder if it is bringing me my groceries." Ah, radio plays.
I've also been thinking of how it's like Babylon 5. I think the main way is the scale. I get so used to TV shows that are about a rag tag group of outcasts who change the world from the ground up because no one expects them. You have that in both LotR and B5, but there are also major powerhouses on the field, making top down changes because they have systemic power behind them. Aragorn is the heir to kings and wields Andúril and the palantír by right. Delenn is a member of the ruling council of Minbar, and legitimately reshapes her government as she goes. And there's prophecy, destiny, magic, going into the West, a thousand-year-old war, and Rangers.
Looking for B5 fic recs. Anyone know good Susan/Talia fixit, Jeff/Michael happy ending, or Marcus/Stephen anything at all?
