muccamukk: Cap pulling Iron Man to his feet. Text: "Help you stand." (Marvel: Help You Stand)

I was reading the Englehart run of Avengers the other day, and saw a great slashy moment. But then I didn't note the issue, and now I can't find it again. I'm pretty sure it was in Avengers vol 1, somewhere between 117 and 170. I think it was post Nomad.

Some of the Avengers are leaving the team, and when it comes up to Steve's turn to state his intentions, he says that the Avenger's Mansion is the closest thing he has to a home in this time, and he feels like he needs to connect with it again, so he'll stay. Iron Man is all bouncy and happy and says he knew he could count on Steve, what a friend. Or something of that sort.

Anyone know an issue number?

I'm pretty sure you're thinking of #151.

Sometimes, I think that surely, Steve and Tony's degree of gayness for one another has to have been racheted up during new Avengers and Civil War in order to reach pinnacles of slashiness like Casualties of War.

Then I look at old volume 1 stuff again, and see things like this.

Tony used to have pet names for everybody -- Thor, Steve, Hank. It's occasionally kind of sad from a Watsonian perspective to look at Silver Age Avengers stuff. They're all so much more playful (well, or when it comes to Clint and Steve's continual dick-measuring contest in very early Avengers, more immature). I know most of it is the difference in writing styles between comics in the 60s and comics today, but it also works reasonable well as a younger and fluffier version of the characters.

The unfortunate thing is, a lot of fans who dislike Tony already believed that, and that's only going to encourage them. In my darker moments, I fear we're never going to have him written IC in his own title again -- that Fraction will have set the tone for the title forever, like Frank Miller with Daredevil, except for the worse instead of for the better.

I've tried to block the Crossing from my memory, but insect!Jan and Teen!Tony are unfortunately memorable.

Ohgods, at first I saw "drawn to his robots" and I was all "NOT SUBTLE".

The actual text is not much better.

I have some 5k words of that already written, although it's 616 and Cap is doubtful of Iron Man's sentience and angsts that maybe he's crushing on a set of programmed responses. Which would be even worse that crushing on a sentient robot.

At first glance, it totally looks like Steve's put his hand over Iron Man's.

Wow. I'm half-expecting them to kiss in the next panel.

And speaking of slashy moments, I recently re-read one of my favorites in the Iron Man/Captain America TPB. It's right after the Chameleon tricks Steve and Tony into fighting, and then Steve is walking down the street alone, looking all sad, and his thought bubble says "I can't get Iron Man out of my mind! Why did he act that way? What does it all mean?"

Congratulations, Tony! You made Captain America sound like a sixteen-year-old girl who can't figure out why Johnny won't ask her to the prom. I hope you're proud.
