A couple of failing titles like JLI and Voodoo are apparently being taken out behind the chemical shed and shot, which is too bad as both could have done good things with better writers. They've been replaced by new titles, one of which actually looks interesting.
DC, in their apparently bottomless desire to baffle their readers, is changing the numbering system again. This means that we'll get to read origin stories that we've already read twenty times, and have trouble remembering how to sort the floppies for years to come. Unless the title is by Paul Cornell, who seems to be ignoring all this.
*Donates pre-ordering.
*Sword of Sorcery #0 - In this new series featuring the long-awaited return of Amethyst, Amy Winston leads a strange life on the road with her mother. She’s about to learn why it’s all been necessary when she discovers she’s the lost princess of Gemworld — and has powerful enemies hunter her! Amythist is written by Christy Marx, best known for her work on animated TV series including G.I. Joe, Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and more, as well as the comics series Sisterhood of Steel. And in the backup story set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, the monstrous warrior Beowulf is charged with finding and defeating the evil Grendel.
Wow. There's a blast from the past. I still have Sisterhood of Steel around somewhere. It was one of the first comics I ever read. Too much rape, but otherwise a wonderful plot. I wasn't going to get this until I read that, and this interview with Christy Marx.
Green Arrow #0 - Written by Judd Winick. Oliver Queen is young, rich and reckless…what could possibly go wrong? Discover the events leading up to the birth of Green Arrow, and Ollie’s history with Roy Harper!
Wait, what? Written by WHO? Well, there goes that title. I thought at first maybe it was just for the origin story, but it looks like everyone else is sticking to their own titles. I think they're doing a stealth change in authors on me. Meh. And DC's back to two women, and I'm dropping this title.
*Batwoman #0 - See how Kate Kane shed her life of excess and disgrace to become the costumed vigilante known as Batwoman! Has she truly put her demons to rest?
Art of this is still so, so gorgeous, but I've already read this plot, and it was written by Greg Rucka, who was probably better at it. Oh well.
Nightwing #0 - It’s the origin of Dick Grayson in The New 52! From orphan to super hero – it’s all here!
I don't even want to know. This was fun, but not fantastic, and I'm dropping it too.
Dial H #0 - One of the first users of the H Dial learns a horrible secret that spells certain doom for the future!
Has anyone been reading this? I'm really curious as to how it is.
*Demon Knights #0 - Deep in the past of The New 52, Etrigan the Demon and Jason Blood struggle against Merlin and Lucifer! The horrible curse that united them is revealed!
See above about how PC is just bopping along doing his own thing. This is just a continuation of last month's plot, no introduction issue included.
*Stormwatch #0 - The history of Stormwatch’s activities in The New 52 are revealed! A new villain arrives, and the safety of the team has never been more in doubt!
This is the one where I actually want to read the history. They've been hinting at it all year, and backstory would be nice.
Blue Beetle #0 - Where was the Scarab before it merged with the current Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes?
Keith Giffen (who actually gives a shit about Jaime) is co-writing this, and there may well be Ted. Still not buying it though.
Smallville Season 11 #5 - Superman comes face-to-face with high-tech weapons on the streets of Metropolis. The hunt for his parents’ killer puts a vigilante known only as “the Batman” on a collision course with The Man of Steel…
Oh, look, another comic with Batman in it.
*Saucer Country #7 - Last issue we heard from Professor Kidd about UFOs as mythology. This is the story of the Bluebirds, the aircraft enthusiasts who know flying saucers are real – and have been taking them on in dogfights since World War 2!
This comic is creepy and amazing, and if you're not reading it, you should be!

Date: 12 Jun 2012 07:51 (UTC)That's the problem with these zero issues--you only need an origin story retelling for two reasons: 1. It hasn't been told clearly or 2. The old one doesn't work for some reason. The only origin stories that really "don't work" right now (thanks to the reboot) are the Robins, and messing with them...well, it threatens to shatter the foundations of DC's reality if they change up the Robins too much, IMHO. Most of DC's origins stories are either clear and fine already, or retelling them would only cause more trouble than it solves. I just shudder at what explicitly mucking around with the history of the Robins is going to do.
I love Paul Cornell. Just...keep going, Paul! Keep one little corner of the DCU blissfully crossover, game-changer, and major-event free for as long as you can, we're rooting for you!

Date: 12 Jun 2012 11:58 (UTC)I suspect I have the comic fan's knee-jerk dislike of anything that smacks of potential retcon, lol. "My God, I've spent the last five years trying to make the Robin timeline make sense, resigned myself to its futility, and now you might have changed it?? Augh!" It can get hard to remember that not everyone knows the details of all the different Batgirls or the fact that Supergirl used to be an angel, lol, and could use a little bit of background.

Date: 12 Jun 2012 15:29 (UTC)I think origins are good for new readers, and I am not unfond of a good ol' origin up date, but I am worried about them screwing shit up. That and 52 origin stories in one month is going to feel a bit bland. I believe that have changed Dick so that he's orphaned at 16. Make of that what you will.
\o/ Paul Cornell. Unfortunately, his numbers haven't been terribly good, but I'm so rooting for him.

Date: 13 Jun 2012 03:22 (UTC)At least with the Superman one they're skipping an origin story and giving us some pre-destruction Jor-El. Even DC's got to realize that Superman's origin story doesn't need a re-do right now. :)

Date: 12 Jun 2012 10:56 (UTC)I'm enjoying Saucer Country. Otherwise, I hope they don't make unnecessary changes to Kate's origin (or come at it from a different angle so it is not literally the same story that JHIII already drew).
