Most weeks I don't really care if Peter Parker lives or dies. The character has no real interest to me, and the only title I've ever liked him in was MC2's Spider-Girl, and he wasn't completely awful in various team books.

However, how great was Spider-Men #2? Okay, maybe a little too much punching, but it was so much fun, and I love Peter's hypothetical question, and everything with Nick. Also MILES! I <3 U FOREVER, Miles!

I also watched The Amazing Spider-Man, which I liked about 200% more than either Spider-Man which I found rather dull, and Spider-Man 2 which was an absolute disaster.

Things I didn't like:
Race fail. So far as I could tell, the only characters of colour with speaking roles were 1) a South Asian Oscorp Minion who was evil and then died, 2) a Latino student whose identity Peter stole, and who was then ejected from Oscorp by security goons, 3) a black cab driver, 4) a black English teacher. These last two didn't do much. Apparently we're not getting a non-white Spider-Man, but would it have killed them to make, idk, some/all of Gwen's family, or the union guy who saved the day, or hell, even Aunt May, a character of colour?

Ableism. I can't say I felt great about a disabled character who was so fixated on his disability that it drove him to mad science. Like what else did we know about Dr Conner's besides that he had one arm? That was pretty much his whole character. I thought they were going to subvert it when they threatened to test it on other people, but then it was the threat of not letting him try it at all that drove him to accelerated human testing. It ended up having a very disabled = monster vibe, I felt.

Failed Bechdel: Though maybe Gwen and her Mum mentioned what was for dinner?

I was really, really unhappy that they killed Captain Stacy off. You know me and valiant police officer characters, he was my favourite. I would honestly be more interested in a kind of Gotham Central movie wherein it was the adventures of Captain Stacy and his brilliant daughter who together save the world with Science!

Two plot holes: I'm not sure where Peter got the money for all that webbing. Why didn't Gwen just smash the Nefarious Device with a hammer? Or why didn't the police helicopter shoot it? That would have stopped the Lizard cold (though would have left him and all the poor cops lizards, but they could have fixed that later).

Things I liked:
All the casting. The villain was kind of a waste of Ifyns, but what could he do with what he had? I really think that everyone else just nailed their roles.

Spider-Man: Did I mention that this movie made me actually care about Spider-man? I think that [personal profile] likeadeuce explains it better than I could here, but essentially he wasn't a whiny little jerk, which I think is something of the heart of his character sometimes. In this movie, being a good and decent person and not lording his powers over people (even though he was 17 and it was hard) was what counted. When he started down the wrong path in that regard he got lectured for it. He could be annoying, which is how a lot of his wisecracking came off, but he was at heart a decent kid who wanted to help. I also liked how much of a science nerd he was, and how this was shown. Oh, and the beat with him wearing glasses because his dad was cute. No one, of course, gives a shit about his mum.

Aunt May: I love Sally Field (though having her play this character makes me feel old!). I think the most heartwrenching scenes in the whole movie were her waiting for Peter to come home. She's just lost her husband of 32 years, and there's this whole in her life and now the only thing she has left is in danger, and she doesn't know what to do. Field absolutely sold it. I also liked her interaction with Ben. It was very cute.

Gwen Stacy: SHE DID IT WITH SCIENCE! (I need "Gwen Stacy does it with SCIENCE" as an icon). I love how she was the top of her class and that got her the Oscorp Job, and that let her make the thing that saved the day. I like how she stood up to the bully (who was then played rather two sympathetically given hos awful he was when we first met him). I like how when in danger she didn't stupidly risk herself, but she did use her knowledge of the building to save everyone else, and keep the Lizard out for longer.

Captain Stacy: <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 Forever! That is all.

Special effects were good in 2D. Excellent Stan Lee moment too.

I was indifferent to the change in backstory. Seemed to work for the purposes of this movie though.

Other comics: I'm completely gripped by the latest Daredevil. Like, I know he's probably going to be fine, but OH NOES! Matt! -clings-

Captain America and Iron Man: as I said over at [livejournal.com profile] cap_ironman, I really liked it. I liked the art, even though Tony's eyes fluctuated between brown and blue (I think they were supposed to be blue, and there was a colouring error on a couple of pages). I thought their relationship was more or less what I want it to be with Tony being joking and smart with an underpinning of angsty, and perhaps relying too much on his tech. Steve having some problems with the way Tony operates but still trusting him absolutely and admitting to his own flaws. There was a lot of mutual admiration, fond jibes and a decent fight scene. I'm also Very Concerned about Tony. Steve had better save him post haste.

Batwoman is confusing the hell out of me, right now. I wish they'd just put the story in order. It would probably read better in trade, but in flopy I don't know what's going on, and I have no investment in any of it. I'm really looking forward to #13 though. Just look at that cover! Also read what Williams is saying about the art.

Ghost was good, but probably not worth picking up Darkhorse Presents for, especially as I think it's getting its own run later.

I'm behind on everything else I think.

But yay! Spider-Man!

Captain America and Iron Man was sold out at my LCS before I got my hands on it! And I had them order a copy for me, but it hasn't arrived yet! I'm a very frustrated fangirl.

The guy at the store swears he'll have it by next Wednesday. Hey, at least I won't have a long wait between the first two issues, right?
