Kelly Sue Deconnick ascended the dais to discuss "Pretty Deadly," her book with Emma Rios. "It's our attempt to revive the spirit of Sergio Leone," she said. "It is a Western assassin competing for a prize she does not necessarily want." She said the book is about "the beauty and what we embrace about it, and the destruction," before adding, "How pretentious does that sound?"

Deconnick described "Pretty Deadly" as following a woman who is disfigured, which actually gives her certain privileges in society. "It's expected that, well, she'll never marry, so she has to be able to own property," she said, listing other benefits as well before stopping herself. "I am not selling this book, am I?"

"It's about sex and violence," Stephenson added wryly.

On the downside, Marvel has announced it's next slate of films, phase two or whatever, which will be:

Iron Man 3
Thor: The Dark World
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Guardians of the Galaxy
Ant-Man (not sure how final they are on that one)

Which I'm sure will all have amazing female love interests and supporting characters. And a raccoon.

There goes the slightest chance of me buying that comic. Which is good, as I'm going to be spending all my money on DeConnick.

Marvel movies: white dude, white dude, white dude*, no idea/never heard of them/i bet it will have more aliens than poc (or poc-as-aliens because that's not offensive at all), white dude. hmm.

*Bucky before Isaiah?? (I mean, I do get why they're making this movie, but I still don't like it.)

(I hope the Thor movie has A LOT of Heimdall.)

Pretty much, right?

I was more or less down with phase one being all white dudes because hey, they're putting their biggest properties first, and that's kind of what you expect. It's not really that creative, but there you are. But now they're established. Now they can stretch out a bit. They could do a Black Widow movie, or an Isaiah Bradley movie, or a Captain Mervel movie with Carol, or a Luke Cage movie. Nope. White dudes and aliens.

(I'm half hoping that Winter Soldier is Peggy, but we all know that's not going to happen. Probably not much of a role for Sam either, dammit, if it's going to be the All Bucky, All the Time movie.)

Haven't you heard? When it comes to making a major Marvel film led by a woman, "[there's no] actress right now who could carry it, or a character that would work either."

I want Natasha Romanoff or Carol Danvers, dammit. I want Misty Knight and Colleen Wing. I want Jennifer Walters or Monica Rambeau. I want Rogue and Storm and Emma Frost and Mystique (though that's more Sony's bailiwick).

But no, white dudes as far as the eye can see. -sighs-

One more reason why I loathe Joe Quesada: he clearly sees women in comics as interchangeable decorations on his boy stuff.

And despite having been told lound a clear for years doesn't seem to get that anyone else cares about these characters either.

That is so, so rude to Scarlett, too. They'll trust Chris Hemsworth to carry a movie, but not her? (No offence to Hemsworth, he's a doll, but she's far more famous and I think talented.)

Two movies, at this point. Seriously though. They cast him and the only thing anyone had seen him in was the two minutes as George Kirk in Star Trek. Whereas Scarlett everyone's heard of and seen in something.
