Your thoughts on the Eagle surprise me, but probably shouldn't, because I think probably about 2/3 of my friends in that fandom reacted that way (It has been suggested that CT did so well in this film because they did accidentally torture him up there in the Scottish highands, so it was not so much acting as actual pain. Personally I think he's great). It is true that you have to dig--or, uhm, invent--for the tension between the boys in the book. But the book has Cottia! Who is my favourite! :D
I would recommend skipping The Silver Branch if you're going to give more Sutcliff a try, as it has none of the things that pushed your buttons in the Eagle movie. Frontier Wolf does though, although not in spades like the film. And it is also super, super angsty.
Sineala and Carmarthen both write really excellent movie-verse fic that would push your buttons I think, if you're looking for more of what the movie dished out.
YAY FANDOM. :D I'll probably come back round to Eagle after my due South obsession wears down a little.
