Putting aside the zombies, my Big Bang does fit the Cottia, tension, and (reasonable) historical accuracy criteria. ;)
There are several centuries in between all of the books, and there's not really any linking thread to miss, except that the protagonists are all Marcus' descendents in some way.
I'm glad you gave it a shot and found it enjoyable. :)
