Which I watched because I will watch any and every version of "The Empty House" ever made.

Came away feeling like the creators of the show actively hate their own fans. Still want to punch Cucumberface. Have no idea what John gets out of that relationship. He should marry Mary and run like hell.

This will be my last interaction with this version, I think.

...so should I be happy and grateful I didn't watch beyond the first 10 mins or so of Exotic Asian episode in first season? :)

I kind of figured if I didn't feel connected/engaged enough by the 2nd episode, I really shouldn't waste time on it. I was able to stick through the 1st ep, but something about the 2nd ep had me disengaging, and I think this was before I read the criticism about it. I even gave my niece the season 1 dvd I didn't finish watching since her friends apparently were urging her to try it.

That's where I quit, too, and I'm pretty content with that.

I've watched most of Sherlock and enjoyed a lot of it, but even though there were things about this episode that I liked too, I did discover that BC's version of Holmes as "I am a total asshat and you should love me for it" is a lot more grating after a two (three?) year gap. Also that this show is kind of the definition of queerbaiting, isn't it? *sigh*

I did like Amanda Abbington's Mary Morstan quite a bit, and I thought some of the pokes at the fandom were actually pretty funny (especially considering how obnoxious and downright ugly Sherlock fandom can be--a little take-down didn't bother me so much as it might've otherwise because, frankly, a lot of them deserve it :-P ).

Oh, geez, I'd forgotten about the fanfic thing. *facepalm* Okay, yeah, on top of that it does seem a bit much. I guess just after the whole Mary Morstan thing (death threats to the actress? REALLY??) I was feeling a bit vindictive myself and didn't blame Moffatt/Gatiss for feeling the same way. In a "yeah, they may have gone too far, but so have the fans" sense. I also didn't get the attacking-fans-in-general vibe from it that you did, but maybe because I wasn't open to it. *shrug*

Funnily enough, I've seen more people complaining about the way the episode treated fans from OUTSIDE the Sherlock fandom than inside it. So I guess the die-hards either missed the jibe entirely, or took it as affectionate? I don't know.

Either way, I'll probably watch the next episode out of curiosity if nothing else, but I don't know if I'd consider myself a fan anymore. EDIT: No, that's not true. If I watch the next episode, it'll be to *support* them bringing in Mary as a character. Because SHE deserves better than she's gotten, regardless of how I feel about anyone else involved with the show. And if they kill her off just so John can move back in with Sherlock, like ACD did (which, I should add, I'm sure they will eventually), that'll be my last episode. :-P

I've seen a few episodes of Elementary and I'd like to get into it more, as much as a reaction to how asinine the Sherlock fandom has been about it as anything. I think I would be already if the first couple of episodes hadn't just had cases that seemed too...simple for any version of Sherlock Holmes, but I've heard that a) that's improved significantly and b) even then the characterization more than makes up for it. I just need to find the DVDs--or the show to download--at a price I can afford. *g* I did get a few episodes from *ahem* other sources, but that was a) taking too long and b) doesn't really SUPPORT the show as such.

Yeah, there seems to be a kind of chicken-and-egg question when it comes to fandoms that seem to be at war with their creators: basically, who acted like an asshat first? I'm tempted to say fandom in the case of Sherlock, because I started watching with the first episode and I don't remember Moffatt *or* Gatiss being nearly so snarky towards the fans until after the fans basically drove the former off Twitter. Of course, I could be remembering through rose-colored glasses. *g* But they definitely do seem to feed on each other. *sigh*

Re: Mary, doesn't Watson say in one of the original ACD stories that he was now a widower and had thus moved back into 221B? I thought it was pretty explicit, but I admittedly can't remember what story it was...

Re: Elementary. It's funny, because normally I'm much more of a character-driven viewer too. I loved NCIS for years, and that was *never* what you'd call complex storytelling *g* but I loved it because the characters were fun. (Until about the 7th or 8th season when it became clear most of them weren't really going anywhere. :-/ ) I guess I just felt like because Elementary was Sherlock Holmes, I shouldn't be able to figure out the cases so easily? *shrug* I did catch a few later episodes and it *was* growing on me, I think I just have to figure out how to catch up on S1-2 before S3 starts or I'll *never* manage. *g* That always happens to me when I get too far behind on shows!

Jumping in here to say that for me Elementary season 1 was a bit slow going, but season 2 has really picked up and I'm finding it pretty top-notch so far. :D
