(Or I'm going to try. Have not reviewed perfume previous to now. Hopefully this is how it works.)

[personal profile] umadoshi linked to the BPAL collection The Collected Poetic Works of Antonin Scalia, which has profits going to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Trevor Project, and the National Center for Transgender Equality, and I needed more perfume, so I thought I'd give it a go. Plus I got something from the Pretty Deadly collection, because that comic is the best, and they sent me a bunch of samples.

Scalia: Looming Spectre of Inutterable Horror
Wherein Scalia channels Lovecraft: raw frankincense and tobacco absolute with Russian leather, blackened champaca, bitter clove, red patchouli, bourbon vanilla and petitgrain.
This goes on 100% patchouli, or maybe 95% patchouli and 5% frankincense. I also didn't get the hang of the bottles at first and put too much on (as in more than a teeny bit), so it was basically, Ahahahaha yeah, I'm drowning in incense! Dad came in as I was putting it on, flinched, and told me "unutterable horror" sounded about right. BUT! once it dries, it settles in totabacco and leather, with the vanilla sort of hovering in the background, and a teeny bit of the clove. It's lovely. Sort of reliable and confident. If I had to pick a character to go with it, it'd be a gruff older mentor type like Inspector Thursday (Endeavour) or Captain Treville (The Musketeers).

Scalia: Mummeries and Straining-to-be Memorable Passages
Rosemary is for remembrance: rosemary water with lavender, blackberry, Italian bergamot, and white musk.
I may have gone too far the other way and not used enough of this one. Again it didn't go on well. It just smelled like... perfume? I'm not actually sure what that smell is, but it's sort of clinical and alcoholy, and unattractive, and didn't seem to have any notes at all. Once it dried, it settled into a fairly unremarkable rosemary/lavender, though with the sweet notes of the blackberry (and possibly the bergamot? Something a little citrusy) lifting it a bit. I might try putting a bit more on later, and it's certainly pleasant enough, but also pretty undemanding. Characters: Queen Anne of Austria (The Musketeers), Cosette (Les Mis), or Anwar (Sinbad 2012).

ETA: I tried this again, and it really is straining to be memorable. I put twice as much on, and it was fine. The citrus/blackberry come out more. But after a couple hours, it just smelled like I'd showered with rosemary-lemon soap; very pleasant, certainly, but not terribly impressive /ETA

Pretty Deadly: Ginny, The Reaper of Vengeance
Sharp tobacco flower and white cognac, a thin layer of smoke, and dusty black pepper pierced by amber
This one went well all around. It came on pretty strong with the tabacco, but quickly settled into amber and smoke, with a bit of cognac. What it reminded me of was that resin smell you get when you're in the alpine and the summer heat is making the larch sap bead through the bark. It's a very particular smell, and this pinged it for me, all sharp and refreshing, but a little bit dangerous. It really does work for Deathface Ginny (Pretty Deadly) or Tiger (Sinbad 2012); it would also work for Colleen Wing (Heroes for Hire), as I don't think it has that hard an edge.

I've only tried one of the samples, though I think a sniff has left me to conclude that The Black Tower (TOO MANY THINGS!) and Aperotos Eros (GASOLINE AND MUSK!) are never going near my skin. Anyway,

Bewitching Brews: Bliss
A scent that is very, very wicked in its own way: the serotonin-slathered scent of pure milk chocolate.
It actually smells like cheap Halloween candy. Much less on the chocolate, and much more on the sugar and chemicals. Probably someone's idea of bliss, but not mine.

These are great! Very detailed, and I really like how you connect them to characters. You could post a link to this in [community profile] smellsgood too, if you haven't already.

This sounds about right, though I haven't tried the Pretty Deadly one yet. I quite like the Unutterable Horror and may steal it occasionally. Might have a sniff of the samples as well.

(Somewhere, I still have a few small samples of department store perfume, but who knows where--or I might have tossed it when I moved, who knows. But there was one with some pretty, light, orange notes to it that I liked.)

Ooh yeah, when I was in my last year of high school I had a lovely sample of green tea perfume (which I liked so much that I kept the card it came with, though I've just checked and that's still at my brother's, so I don't know who it was by).

Noted. Will have a sniff.

Man, you told me about this, and I HAD ALREADY COMMENTED. LIKE A YEAR AGO. Why, brain, why. I would forget my own feet if they were't glued on.
