The problem with having written a pile of comment fic then posted it to AO3, is I'm usually at the Eh, Whatever stage when I do the titles. A lot of them are pretty samey and generic. Which is fine, I guess; titles are hard.

But then when I get those awesome kudos alert things, I usually stare for a minute, thinking, "Oh... I'm glad they liked my story... whatever the hell that one was," and end up clicking through because I have no memory of having ever written anything called that.

So apparently I end with dialogue a lot (including the same bit of dialogue twice *facepalm*. I don't mention characters' names a lot, but if I do, they're the main characters of the story. I try to avoid summaries of the rest of their lives but a couple seem to have listed in (6 and 14).

Listed Newest to Oldest. )

More than half the time I lead with a character's name, usually the name of one of my main characters. Sometimes I get several main characters in there. I tend to start in the middle of a scene, usually with an action or dialogue. If I lead with setting, it's usually a story about the setting (2, 6, 15, 19, but not 10). I seem to lead with dialogue a lot more than I used to, and untagged dialogue at that. The dialogue is often scene setting, and not always from my main character (7, 16).

That's all I got.

This is my stocking.

My stocking is full of wonderful things, like a Kate/Renee ficlet with hugging and empathy, shareable Rivers of London text icons, a ficlet about Jason and Alcmene getting together, a slightly meta ficlet about Sinclair and Catherine with reincarnation and time travel, and the Jeff/Michael story that I always, always, always, always wanted to read. Plus a lovely assortment of banners and good wishes.

My eyes look like ♥.♥ right now. I should probably see a doctor.

You should go to my stocking and read all the things. Also the icons are aces. Then you should comment and praise the people who gave me things.

Seriously, this is how Eustace turned into a dragon.

I have also written things, for those interested.

(also, I'm bored and waiting for Nenya to get off work.)

So it all started when [tumblr.com profile] danverrs posted stats about f/f in Marvel fandom.

ok so you know how david was talking about the lack of f/f stuff in fandom last night?? well ok i decided to go onto AO3 and compare the difference between the amount of m/m, f/m, and f/f fic

since AO3 doesnt have an option to sort through all fandoms at once without choosing a tag first (which is lame btw), i decided to chose the most popular fandom on the site aka Marvel. this is actually really lucky for my experiment, because marvel has a good deal of well-developed female characters in their franchise!! alright yea awesome let’s get down to business!!

the marvel tag has 31216 fics in it, a number that’s growing all the time. here’s a breakdown:

  • 17196 are m/m fics (~55%)

  • 8774 are gen (~28%)

  • 7152 are f/m (~22%)

  • 1674 are multi (~5%)

  • 679 are other (~2%)

  • 1007 are f/f (~3%)

yea, that’s right f/f fics only make up about 3% of AO3’s marvel archives. that’s fucking pitiful considering, if we extrapolate, that in the entirety of AO3 probably less than 10% is f/f

ohh it gets better tho: see, AO3 has this handy tag filter sidebar that let’s you see the most popular ship tags for a fandom. for marvel the tag it looks like this:

  • Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier (4062)

  • Steve Rogers/Tony Stark (4031)

  • Clint Barton/Phil Coulson (2233)

  • Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov (1744)

  • Loki/Thor (1722)

  • Pepper Potts/Tony Stark (1300)

  • Loki/Tony Stark (1149)

  • Bruce Banner/Tony Stark (970)

  • Jane Foster/Thor (700)

  • James “Bucky” Barnes/Steve Rogers (519)

yep everybody in that list is white and there’s only three het ships in that entire list. good job guys, gold stark for all of y’all.

Which lead to a chorus of tagging and similar complaints from frustrated f/f shippers.

such as )

Which are AO3 tagging issues I think we all feel, to be honest.

Then, inevitably, someone argued the point: [tumblr.com profile] coyotesuspect made a long post, coming from their place of experience which was SPN fandom. Which I'm not quoting here, because long, so just go read it if you're interested.

But it took the line:
Stuff like this is always very interesting to me, and I hesitate to attribute it solely (or even mainly) to fandom’s sexism given that fandom - at least the part that is actively uploading fic to A03 - is predominantly female, a large percentage of which identifies as queer, and thus presumably is interested in seeing and producing fanworks about f/f relationships.

Which isn’t to say that self-internalized misogyny and homophobia aren’t rampant in fandom, nor that fandom’s massive fetishization of queer male experience doesn’t need to be unpacked, but, imho, the larger portion of blame lies with the media we’re consuming in the first place.

(Then goes on to talk about SPN fandom. And winds into the thesis that there's not much femslash because women don't interact much on screen and fic writers "thrive on interaction" [which totally explains the existence of Clint/Coulson and Darcy/anyone-not-Jane, and why Rizzoli & Isles comes close to qualifying for Yuletide]).

Which promptly lead [tumblr.com profile] fictionaladyfeels to pitch in with with: also, queer women are not exempt from sexism. i knew a lesbian in high school who still exclusively shipped m/m pairings. she was not an exception; her type of fan is pretty common.

(then the whole thing descended into race wank)

The last led me, as a lesbian, to say "Oh, fuck you."
1. Highschool, clearly when we all reach the height of maturity and artistic development.
2. Your shipping choices do not reflect your sexuality.
3. Yes, it would be nice to see more f/f, but you're not a bad fan, a bad woman or a bad queer for not writing it.
4. Yes, there is totally sexism and homophobia in fandom. You bet there is. I thing that's one of the things the stats show, and Supernatural is a pretty obvious fandom to pick when you want to talk about that, but writing m/m or m/f does not make you a bad fan, a bad woman or a bad queer.
5. I wish people would just say they're more comfortable writing about (white) guys than make up reasons like "not enough interaction" or "we don't have enough canon backstory" because that just makes you look like a goof.
6. I think this is something about which useful discussion can be had, but,
7. Fandom/sexuality police can step off. You're not helping anything.

(I say this as a queer woman who writes m/m, m/f, f/f, and gen about men and women. I will admit to writing primarily m/m, though, before you point it out, I'm aware).

[livejournal.com profile] wrisomifu sign ups are open. From their comm info: Write Something, You Miserable Fuck is a writing group for underachievers who enjoy the company of same. To join, all you need to do is commit to writing (original fic, fanfic, to do lists, your thesis, your memoirs - anything!) for at least ten minutes each day for the entire month of November. And you are permitted - encouraged even! - to complain bitterly about every single word.

Reading Quantum Leap fic and feeling nostalgic. Man that's a depressing fandom though. The levels of UST and angst remind me of Harry/Bob from the Dresden Files tv show.

Speaking of Harry Dresden, I'm not sure I'm enjoying Arrow enough to keep at it. I like a lot of the characters, and superheroes on tv are fun, but there's a few things (mainly the plots and the stupid fucking voice overs from Captain Obvious) that are pushing me away. I'm going to give it a couple more episodes because the next few have different writers.

I AM really liking Elementary. In the grand style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the mystery plots are exceedingly silly, but I'm really liking the interactions between Holmes and Watson, Watson and Gregson and Holmes and Gregson. Bell hasn't gotten a lot to do so far, but what I've seen I've liked.

So I wrote like 450 words of my [livejournal.com profile] avengersfest, then realised it was a) horrible and b) the wrong place to start the story, and tore it all up. Since then I've been procrastinating madly. In aid of that, as seen on my whole entire flist... (with no solid promise of fills)

Pick a trope from this list and provide a fandom/pairing and I'll tell you something about the story I'd write for that combination (i.e. write a snippet from the story or write not!fic or tell you the title and summary for the story I would write)

Universe: Marvel 616
Pairings: Steve/Tony (background Carol/Wanda, Jan/Hank, Sam/OFC)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Dub con due to sex pollen (every pairing). Seriously there is so much sex pollen in this fic. Identity porn issues.
Word Count: 9,600
Beta Reader: [personal profile] nenya_kanadka
A/N: This fic is set shortly after the Demon in a Bottle arc of Iron Man Volume One. For [personal profile] valtyr, my Cap_Ironman Bingo Card, prompt: Misscommuication, and my [community profile] hc_bingo card, prompt:Sex Pollen. Title from Muddy Waters.
Summary: The giant squid spewing sex pollen wasn't the strangest part of anyone's week. Captain America's behaviour after the fact, however, was making Tony wonder how deeply they were all affected, and what exactly was going on.

A breaker thundered in through the gap, building power along the narrow channel to dash itself against the rocks. A fine spray of salt water enveloped both of them, and leaked into Tony's suit. The water pulled back, gathering itself for a new assault, leaving Captain America dripping, muscles gleaming under skin-tight leather.

Day Fifteen: In your own space, share a favourite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

I've had so many wonderful times staying with friends I met through fandom. The earliest was [personal profile] rohan_lady, who I met in a romance roleplay board on Tolkien Online. Our characters dated for years, but never got past first base. She turned out to be this wonderful, effervescent Aussie chick, who came to visit me here and we roadtripped across the province. It was amazing. I remember hanging out at this Hostel in Jasper and sweet-talking this English guy and a Kiwi (who hadn't met before either) into driving us down the Icefield Parkway, and just spending the day all four of us going Holy Fuck! Mountains!

My first about six months on LJ, I was into Master & Commander fandom pretty seriously. I had seen the film but was just starting to read the books and like [personal profile] cruisedirector, [personal profile] esteven, [personal profile] seascribe and [personal profile] sparowe were about my only friends (and we're still friends!) The only one gone of that crowd is Bronzelionel, who I still miss fiercely. I used to enter in the drabble challenges over at [livejournal.com profile] mandc100, I think Pullings was my favourite character, so I used to award all my rum to him (you got a virtual shot of rum for every drabble that fit the prompt), and everyone was so friendly and lovely even when I hadn't read the books at all.

I stayed with [personal profile] esteven and saw windmill museums and the Wall and ancient churches full of modern art, and watched Starsky & Hutch and The Professionals

Later, I was hovering at the edges of SGA fandom and [personal profile] svmadelyn hosted the Summary Ficathon: The SV and SGA Version, where people wrote terrible, terrible summaries then other people wrote stories for them. I didn't even get a story but I still had a fantastic time. I hadn't written anything in an age, and my story wasn't even very good by crack standards, but people liked it, and I loved reading all the other stories.

Immediately hitting it off with [livejournal.com profile] artemis_rain at a party because we both loved Ianto in that TW ep where he thought he was a serial killer, and then dating her for eight months and staying friends to this day.

I spent a week with [personal profile] linaelyn and her beautiful family, and we went to the Computer History Museum to watch a working model of Babbage's Difference Engine, ate wonderful food, and watched Iron Man.

Then there was comics fandom. Man, that's been my fannish life for years now. I remember the excitement of writing again, writing because I loved it, Sea Stars taking shape under my fingers as I inhaled canon and altered as I went. Getting and leaving reviews and reading all the fic I could find. Deciding to step up as co-mod of the ship comm and meeting two wonderful friends in my sister mods. Having to stretch myself as I learned to run challenges and moderate a quickly growing community of fellow fans. Still wanting to write and read all the fic imaginable.

I visited [personal profile] culurien and [personal profile] marinarusalka and went on tall ships, and lighthouses and city tours, and had more amazing food and watched SPN and read comics and lost at Lord of the Rings Trivial Pursuit.

Going to WisCon, stayed with [personal profile] garrideb, my first convention ever, and the amazing feeling of wow, this is my species. Here's a conference of a thousand fannish women and men, who I can talk to and who want to hear what I have to say and who think so many fascinating shiny things. We stayed up too late and got up too early every day, and being absolutely exhausted by the end. We read piles of comics and watched Buffy and... god, I don't even remember. STUFF! It was amazing. I ate so much fried cheese and drank so much local beer. Wisconsin is AMAZING.

And of course I met Nenya through fandom. Oddly neither of us remember which one. Possible The Lord of the Rings, through the PPC. She's sitting across from me reading Doctor Who/B5 crack fic, and I love her very much.

Thank you, fandom.
