Time I logged back in (reason it logged me out)
  • Mon, 15 May 2017 20:41:27 GMT (The time it logged me out because I clicked on a link from the search page)

  • Mon, 15 May 2017 21:03:54 GMT (The time it logged me out because I clicked on a link to a post from a notification e-mail)

  • Mon, 15 May 2017 23:26:58 GMT (The time it logged me out because I entered Nenya's profile into the address bar, instead of clicking through to it from my profile)

  • Mon, 15 May 2017 23:27:22 GMT (The time I tried to log in just by using the log in box at the top of the screen, not by going through the official log in page, whereupon it just reloaded the page but left me logged out.)

(And this is despite me usually being really careful ONLY to read my reading list from the readinglist page, and to open all links in private windows so it doesn't dump my log in.)

I've put in two tickets for help. [staff profile] denise at one point left a comment with a possible solution (call your IP) that didn't work at all. And said something about my router. No idea what that entails. (Which, like, she's running the whole site, so I'm not saying she should drop everything and sort out two users, or anything like that.)

I am really, really fucking sick of this. I just want to be able to use the damn website. (And yes, it's ONLY this site, and yes I've cleared my cookies, and deleted my cache and done a dance to the Internet god. It is something specific in the interaction between this Internet connection and Dreamwidth's login. Nothing else.)

I feel your pain. I really should start clicking through to more things from my DW inbox instead of email alerts. BUT I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO!!! (plus it only sometimes works, wtf)

This means that sometimes I can ONLY view or reply to locked content on my phone!

...ooh, I'm currently logged in? (clicked over from inbox, after practically having to force my hand to not click over from email, it's such an ingrained action by now) ICON TIME!

EE TEE AY: Phone did go through a period at some point this spring where it was doing the screwy constantly-logging-me-out thing. But then it recovered. So IDK. Did you do anything to it around then??

I feel like I've read most of your entries about this in the past (and I'm so sorry it's still happening!) but I can't remember what all else you might have mentioned that they ran you through for troubleshooting. Does it make any difference if you're typing in the addresses as http or https? I'm wondering if one or the other is triggering a redirect that's causing the hiccups.

(Not that it should make a difference. It absolutely should Just Work.)

Or. Idk. Maybe there's something hosted in your journal style that's calling in from a URL that's confusing things in the page reloads? Have you ever checked whether a different/sock/whatever journal with a basically empty journal style has the same problems?

I'm not sure what else is out there, but something like cloudy days - https://muccamukk.dreamwidth.org/read?s2id=87663 - that doesn't seem to have a pattern in the background like I think your spiffy journal does.

But regardless: Argh, and I'm sorry journaling has been such a source of frustration, and that they haven't been able to help.

Yeah, I just checked as well, and email links and search results remained http regardless of whether I loaded the site in https. Links within the inbox header (so entry title, username, profile head) seem to fully swap to http or https, depending on which version of the page loads, but the links within people's entries are hit or miss, depending on their own posting and browsing preferences.

Weird, but frankly unsurprising at this point, that Nenya is getting different behaviour on desktop vs. mobile.

Nenya runs the same version of windows, but uses a different browser and layout, and it still dings her. she can often only post with her phone, which seems less affected.

That still sounds like a replicable problem, which means the support team should be able to fix it.

I used to have the same issue but it just mysteriously resolved itself and it's never come back. I wasn't on satellite internet but I was on older and very shaky ADSL and I'm now on a weird hybrid wireless thing that people in towns too small to get proper broadband are stuck with. I wonder if the rural location and therefore unusual kinds of access is what causes the issue? Do any other very rural DWers have/had the logout problem?

I don't have time to read all the comments but every time you've complained about this in the past I've assumed the same problem: your login cookie is related to a particular IP address, so if your router or LAN (local area network or whatever you're connecting through to the wider net) changes your IP (usually by disconnecting from the wider net then reconnecting*) then your login cookie no longer identifies you as you and you have to log in again. For most of us this is an excellent security measure but for anyone on a dodgy connection it's a PITA. Does that sound like what Denise suggested?

If your journal is set to record IPs then that's an easy way to see if your IP is changing regularly and if those changes match with logout times.

Glossary: IP = internet protocol, ISP = internest service provider

No, actually scrap the details of the above suggestion because your IP address was the same the last two times you commented on my journal, which were weeks apart. Hmm, I'd guess it's still probably a behaviour of your router/local network. I'm not an expert though, obv.
