[personal profile] sovay: it'll be the joke about [infinitesimal amount] to push the button, [incalculable amount] to know which button to push.

So in various efforts to trouble shoot last night, I walked over to the router, unplugged the cable from the modem, plugged it into my laptop, bashed around for a while trying to get it to kick my off DW (it didn't), and plugged the router back into the modem again.

In the last eighteen or so hours since I did that, DW hasn't logged me out, no matter how many http links I click, Nenya same.

I don't know what changed, but I'll take it!

Okay, that is truly bizarre, but I'm glad it's fixed!

As someone who is paid to help people use their computers, I can verify that "complaining loudly and crankily about how it doesn't work ever and nobody can fix it" is invariably going to fix it (at least temporarily.)

I hope it sticks this time!

I feel like when people mash buttons frantically, sometimes they hit the one important one by accident, et voila!

Only, in the frantic button-mashing stage, one isn't carefully documenting action and result, so may later have NO IDEA what actually fixed the thing.

Crossing my fingers here, but tentatively hopeful!!

At least if it comes back it's pretty clearly narrowed down to "something is fucked with the router" at this point, it seems like. You don't need a special kind of router for your IP, do you? If not, used ones are pretty cheap, and we can totally do a whip-round if we have to.

Clearly, the gremlins in the router were just waiting for you to perform the correct ritual to appease them.

Did you do anything to the router in your previous attempts to fix the problem? I don't recall if you mentioned doing so, but I've had to briefly unplug the router at home a few times to get the thing working again, usually not more than once a month if that. But I live in an urban environment rather than a remote area, so who knows.

Ah. "Turn the thing off for a few seconds" would have been my suggestion if I'd known that. I unplug the current router because I can't find an on/off switch.

That's usually the next step--unplug and re-plug everything that can be plugged. :) I don't fully understand how or why that sometimes work, but I don't argue with the results much. ;) (I had to do that the other day with the blu-ray player. It's a finicky and temperamental Toshiba, and I teased my oldest brother that it didn't want to work for him because it started working after he left the living room--and after I unplugged and re-plugged the power cord. XD)

I was going to suggest "turning it off and turning it on again" before you bought a new router, lol, but I see I don't need to, lol.

I'm so glad!! And who knows why it worked? At least it worked.

[personal profile] lilacsigil is one of those people who have a field around them that makes tech work - sometimes I just have to get her to walk close to whatever is malfunctioning and it will come back to life. Maybe I should hire her out.
