Pick any story I've written, or, in the case of my longer, chaptered works, any chapter from any story I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

Find my fic here.

Also I did totally get that the . . . separations were repetitions of Tony being dreamtortured. Because you are evil

Thank you so much for this great & thorough comment, and thanks again for the story itself, which was so much what I wanted. (And yes, we still appear the only Howard/Joe and Howard & Joe people. Fandom writers, what are you waiting for?)

You know, I've never read the book Once upon a Time in America was based on, but I did watch the movie as a teenager (I think it was my first film released for 16 and above which I swindled myself into) in the cinema, first time I saw a Sergio Leone & Ennio Morricone collaboration (somehow, I had managed to avoid all their Italo Westerns on tv), so it had quite the impact on me. While I haven't rewatched it for decades. But as with all things when young, one subconsciously assumes it to be more familiar to other people than it probably is.

My favourite review of that book said, in its entirety, "I can see why he became a communist."

LOL. I must read this book. And the one about Gay NY. I adore your story, and all the period work that went into it!

Would you smack me and not in the fun way if I said Undiminished (The Planets and Islands Remix)? I just loved what you did with it.

If not that one, I love Tomorrow It's Ransom... or Torture! (especially how it goes from lighthearted roleplay to hot and fairly emotionally serious)

and I read it and went, Wow! I really don't think I can do much with that setting, because it's SO GORGEOUS the way you did it, so I'll just... puddle around with something else I guess.

AW. LOL all that was the product of super frantic reading on the Star Wars wiki, may it live forever, because I knew jack shit about Poe and his home planet. I did wind up reading the awesome Rey's Guide to Survival in the Wastelands, or whatever they called it, which was fun.

ANYWAY. I ended up deciding that the person who had the most interesting relationship with leaving, healing, surviving and finding home in things not your actual home was Leia, because GUESS WHO CAN'T EVER GO HOME!

I actually loved that you kind of turned the fic inside out and made a kind of background figure (as much as she can be background!) into the main character and yet kept all the connections and even some scenes. I think that's what makes a great remix (I still think I don't really know how to do it).

"Well, sweetheart," Han grumbled as he opened the hatch just long enough for them clamber into the Falcon's heated interior, "you've picked a good planet for it."
There's like metaphors for being COLD like an ICE PLANET and EMOTIONALLY DEAD, but then she goes into the WARMTH of FRIENDSHIP.

I'm so entertained by the tree. Way too much time on wiki, and I still don't know what the fuck it does. Maybe it makes people nicer? Also, see I tied into your story! It is a remix, not just me meandering off!

I also love the fucking tree. Why on earth is a tree Force sensitive? Is it a big plot point? A MacGuffin? In the comics tie-in, it's like a big journey IIRC to get it, so what's the deal? Is it Force Groot?

It really must be STRANGE for Leia to have the whole calender almost but not quite based on the death of her world.

....back to the "you're evil" part

The orchids Kes had planted to mark out the path glowed gently, their luminance calling the first few silver honeyeaters.

YES WHICH WAS AWESOME BECAUSE I LOVED THEM BUT COULD NOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO FIT THEM IN I almost had them be the flowers Rey and Poe leave for Finn, but that felt way too fucking sappy.

I 100% forgot Poe was born yet in the first draft. THERE HE IS! another amazing tie in w/ your story.

I think in canon when she plants the tree, he might not be! Whatever *handwave* It was great seeing him as a loved baby with his family.

I'm forever scared by the Diana Wynne Jones' Tough Guide to Fantasy Land entry about food. STEW.

I love that book, but I also tried to reread it last year and had to slam it shut for fear I would never be able to write anything again.

This is one of two Leia/Shara/Kes fic at all. Come ON, fandom!

Once again you do the rarepair justice!

The senate of the New Republic was ambulatory. So new planet every few years. There's like three hours on Wookiepedia I'm never getting back.

That place is scary. Impressive. Yet scary.

"Come on," she said. "Let's find that bed."
And with the Senate moving planet to planet, Leia will never settle as long as she stays with that. She'll still be on the move, like in the Rebellion. So her only hope of stability is to hold onto Han. If she can, though she knows she can't. So she holds onto the Senate itself. Until.

She loses or leaves on, and moves to the next. Survive and advance.

I'm just SOBBING over here in the corner, no, no problem

So she gets kicked out of the Senate (again), and raises an army (again).
Thy firmness makes my circle just,/And makes me end where I begun.
And in the end, as in the beginning. It all circles around her. Leia will never find a true home again, but she will be the home of her people. She, undiminished, will be a lodestar.

okay maybe you're slightly less evil

Okay, so some people said, you just made ANH again! But look, having the previous generation makes it so much more powerful. And no, retconning in a generation with the prequels doesn't count for me. The children of our children grew up and they have Star Wars again.

That really fits with the theme of your story about Leia having to build and rebuild again, too. Always going on. And it's humanity, same shit happens, different era.

Also never forget woobie Han post carbonite.

....are there woobie post-carbonite Han fics on AO3? There should be lots.

Also I'm sure Leia knows if Pava can handle a squadron.

I feel like some of the dialogue is lifted from you, but I don't remember which bits.

It was definitely the same, but changed, which again, remix! Also, I loved how you put in that the look on Poe's face reminded her of Ben, I was like OMG SHIT.

tl;dr I loved this fic and the commentary is great too.
